July 15th, 2005 is the 250th anniversary of the unlawful deportation (expulsion)of the Acadians from Canada. It is this event more than any other which symbolizes the Acadian's strength and desire to be a distinct nation. Canada has never apologized for this stain on Canadian history and it a symbol of Acadian unity today.
Question: Your T-shirt looks ok, exept that it say Acadian Nation 1755-2005, which makes it seems like we are talking about the 250th anniversary of the birth of a nation. In reality, 1755 ended what might have become an Acadian nation. Also, where did you get "Strength Through Unity" slogan? Is this an Acadian thing?"
Answer: The Strength Through Unity slogan is the Acadian Motto (Canadian) adopted in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island in 1884, during the second Acadian Convention.
I believe that the Acadian 250th Commemorative Tshirt is a bit like someone wearing a Metis nation tshirt with Louis Riel on it. The Government of Canada might think that hanging Louis ended the hopes of a Metis nation in Manitoba, but it really only permanently engraved a memory on the hearts and mind of every Metis in Canada that they are a distinct people with a spirit that will never die.. True, they may never have a country they can call their own, but they have something no one can ever take away. Nationhood is just a state of mind anyway – backed up by pride and history - countries come and go. At least that is what we believe at Nation tshirts.
